Nagging Elitism

There are a number of people in our society who can be termed as elitists. As and when some business or a trade flourishes, such a behaviour begins to take shape in their minds. The kind of boundaries around empathy, as to when to relate to people's emotions or give alms becomes almost redundant. As this cannot be categorized as an evil, the threat still looms large and can cause grave concerns to cohabitation. The primary cause of not giving alms to the needy or somewhat needy is a kind of elitism. This can be shown when people beg from you on the streets during traffic snarls. We kind of ask them, 'go find some work'. More so, we sneer at people when they are not belonging to our social status. There can be many such instances. But the world is made up of a number of units of society. One has to mingle with people according to these norms and become elitist themselves when the flock calls. Otherwise one risks of being the odd person out. The story being cut short: everyon...

The Vagueness of Cost

The best things in life are available for free of cost. Though this seems as an inane thing to say, but it is all the more true. We have been accustomed to the lifestyle of paying for the best of things and have lost the true finer things that one has to cherish the most in, as they say, translation. Getting out of the rut helps in these cases. A great thing to live by this gold standard of weighing the best things is to ask a person who is facing an imminent death to unravel. One of these is the life story of Anne Frank. She explained to people that we take life for granted as and when we get to enjoy everything at hand. But she experienced the imminent death in the form of an invasion of her country during the Second World War. This war and the situation she is, along with the life revolving around her family, changed her approach to living life completely. Had she been a survivor of this war, she would have lived her life differently. These finer things are all around us: famil...

The Control Conundrum

Veracity of control is an illusion. Anything that you can control becomes monotonous and boring. Uncertainty brings about mixed feelings, but it is enjoyable. Knowing where life can take you brings a less worthy permutation. Consider preparing for an exam. If you would have known the outcome or result of it, the very purpose would have been defeated. Risking something not very important is a joy of life. Risking even greater things is gambling. But the former is less severe and scathing on life. It brings its own joys.

Familiarity Breeds Contempt

Being familiar to someone is a very eerie thing to everyone around. The moment one gets familiar with someone, there develops an air of frankness to say anything to the person involved: even wild things. The subtle changes and unambiguous traits to see in those who tend to be this way is in their talks or gestures. Though the exact fodder to this phenomenon is akin to a wild goose chase, some highlighted behavior gives anyone a creep. Once I had been privy to such a situation when one of the person my mother became close to had the said feeling for her. The lady was a person with a menial job to fend for and gradually grew close to her. Later, through the course of time, she took my mom for granted and demanded more goodies/freebies. The moment she ignored the woman, she felt miffed. My mom knew that she courted trouble for being nice to her. A very important thing to remember is one should follow the nuances and manners of the society they can represent. Anything that is not alon...

Colourable Preferences

Nowadays, anybody can give colour to any incident or act of anyone around. The things regarding the choice of the person as to what led to them choosing the same as against another, can bring justifiable colour. The same goes in public acts of somebody famous too. While it may be innocuous in the eyes of the subject, it may totally foment wrong opinions. Recently, a person known to me became the cause of this confusion: He was apprehended by a law enforcement official for being at the wrong place at the right time. The fact that he looked hefty and rather rugged brought about many wrong pointers in their mind. When somebody freed him from their clutches, they were more convinced that he was a vagabond. But through continued contact with him and knowing him better they thought otherwise. This can happen to anybody and what something is shown need not be what it seems. There can be plenty of instances pointing to this but the reality prevails. Good that something incriminating to be put ...

Presupposed Destiny

In all the humdrum around in bustling areas, people fail to notice many obviously overlooked things. One of them is the wrong notion of everything or everyone put in their thinking of elitism. The notion is that if a person is very talented, he need to fit in a greater walk of life or should not be a 'big fish in a small pond'. While this aspect of their thinking seems to be absolutely true, it is really not. I once was interviewed by a writing company and they asked me to send a sample article. They gave some silly reason and ruled out my writing altogether. Though I thought that the Company was good, I later found out that there was a dearth or lacking of ample work in it for all the employees. Interestingly, only an article would be written by an employee over a period of few months. The fact that if I was working there, it would be a struggle to make ends meet for a living made me thankful for the course of my career I chose. I learnt work from an editor and that helped me...

Inexpensive Praise

People heaping praise on others are the most loved. But it is not wise to do it incessantly and there should be a limit to it. Sycophants who do it more and more to gain favour of an authoritarian person are hated by people other than the target himself. This is not the topic here. Imagine a person is down with you and is envious of the person and stature attached to you. The best way to gain favour and some respect from him is to praise him as compared to his forthright enemy. This can settle the score and the man who is against you can respect your stature somewhat. I had the privilege of doing this and gaining some ground in the man's mind. His close confidante from many years became an unrelenting soft enemy. I praised the person's language skills as compared with this enemy. The result was that he became welcoming to me and the creditworthiness of me increased in his sight. The words hit the sweet spot of the target and life became easier. This is not so manipulative of p...
